Vehicle Charging Points Required for New Homes in England
A new law will mean that all new homes and other buildings in England will have to install charging points for electric vehicles.
The UK government has announced that all newly built homes, and other buildings such as supermarkets and offices, will have to install electric vehicle charging points beginning in 2022.
As well as new homes and businesses, buildings that have more than 10 parking spaces after being renovated will also need to install charging points.
According to Gov.uk, this will result in up to 145,000 charging points being installed across England every year. This will help prepare for 2030, when new gasoline and diesel cars will no longer be allowed to be sold in the UK.
At the end of November 2021, there were 365,000 fully electric vehicles in the UK, according to electric vehicle information site Next Green Car. In 2020, 6.6% of new vehicles in the country were electric.
According to Zap-Map, there are now almost 30,000 public charging points in the UK. However, 45% of them are in southeast England and the London area. Some people worry that there are not enough charging points in small towns — and that the new law does not do enough to fix this problem.
Car and Driver reports that the electric vehicle with the longest range is made by California company Lucid Motors. The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition can travel almost 840 kilometers on a single charge. However, the range for the average electric vehicle is about 400 kilometers.
