Airbnb Room Invites Guests to Become 'Mayor of Hell'
People in the US state of Michigan can become "Mayor of Hell" for a night this October by booking the "Mayor's Lair" on Airbnb.
Hell is a small town in Michigan, about 100 kilometers west of Detroit. Hell doesn't really have an official mayor, but John Colone, who owns many local businesses and the Mayor's Lair, has given himself the title.
According to the town's website, Hell was named because the first man to live there in 1838, George Reeves, used to pay local farmers with whiskey. When people asked where their husbands had gone, the farmers' wives would say, "He's gone to Hell again."
However, some say the town was named Hell because when Reeves was asked what he wanted to call it, he said, "I don't know, you can name it Hell for all I care." Others say the name comes from the area's many swamps and mosquitoes.
The Mayor's Lair includes a queen-sized bed, a fire pit and an outdoor movie screen for scary films. The small house is available to rent on October 18, 21 and 24. Each night will cost $31 (plus taxes and fees) — because Halloween is on October 31.
However, only people who live in Michigan can rent the Mayor's Lair, and only two can stay at a time.
Other than staying in the Mayor's Lair, visitors to the town can get a meal in the Hell Hole Diner, and couples can even get married at Hell's Chapel of Love.
